Introduction
NED Center for Engineering Software Training (NED CEST) was established in the year 2002 The primary objective of the centre is to promote research and disseminate technical knowledge in the field of Civil Engineering The Centre strives to achieve its objectives through specialized training programs, seminars, and workshops related to the state-of-the-art technology and engineering software. NED CEST is the first centre in Pakistan to have achieved the status of Satellite Centre for ACECOMS, AIT, Thailand. The main objective of NED CEST is the development and use of computing technology for engineering applications. Other goals and activities of the Centre can be better conveyed by the following chart.

Activities
Since its inception, NED CEST has been catering to the training needs of a number of consultants, academic institutions, and other public and private concerns through professional development seminars and workshops. Some of the organizations that have benefitted from these seminars and workshops includes NESPAK, A.A.Associates,Mushtaq and Bilal, Military Lands and Cantonment, Civil AviationAuthority, Hyderabad Development Authority, Communication and Works Department, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Sir Syed University of Engg. & Tech.
Following are the seminars and workshops that have been conducted by NED CEST:
| Building
Design using Integrated Object Based Structural Analysis & Design Software. |
October 15, 2003 | 250 participants |
| International
Seminar on Computer Aided Analysis and Design (I-SCAAD) Structural Analysis
and Design of Concrete Structures |
January 18 -19 , 2002 | 30 participants |
| International
Workshop on Computer Aided Analysis and Design (I-WCAAD) Analysis, Design,
Monitoring & Strengthening of Bridge Structures |
June 16-20, 2003 | 30 participants |
Software Available
Various Structural Engineering licensed software are available with NED CEST to cater to the needs of both faculty and students. Being a Satellite Centre for ACECOMS, NED CEST is also the local distributor of the following software.
| SAP 2000 | State-of-the-art 3D Technology for Structural Engineering |
| ETABS | Integrated Building Analysis and Design Software |
| SAFE | Integrated Design of Concrete Slabs and Basemats |
| BATS 2001 | Software for Modeling and Analysis of Buildings in 3D |
| GEAR 2003 | Integrated set of programs for assisting routine Design work |
| GRASP | Rapid Graphical Modeling and Analysis of Structures in 2D |
| CSI Section Builder | Analysis and Design of Steel, Concrete and Composite Sections |
Future Plans
Other than conducting training, workshops and seminars, NED CEST also focus on Software Development and Promotions. The Centre aims to be a platform of research and development of quality software for engineering applications. In this regard, the Centre's prime focus is the training of faculty. On the basis of these training, the spillover work from ACECOMS may be obtained which could be developed using the university's expertise and resources.
A
biannual newsletter covering all the activities of the Centre is soon to be
published. The main objective of the newsletter would be to highlight the goals
of the Centre and to promote the activities of the Centre among the Engineering
community.
