NED from the year of Inception to Becoming a University.



 

August 1921
Proposal made by Mr. S.C Shahani (Princiapl D.J Science College) for an engineering college in Karachi.
1922
Prince of Wales Engineering College was established (under the administration of the Sindh Collegiate Association)
1924
Renamed as the NED Engineering College (to commemorate Nadirshah Edul Jee Dinshaw). Provisional affiliation to the University of Bombay was granted.)
17th October 1947
Renamed yet again as NED Government Engineering College. The administration was taken over by the Government of province of Sindh.
1951
Affiliation changed from university of Sindh to University of Karachi.
14th October 1955
Government of West Pakistan took over the administration of the college.
1st July, 1962 to 16th April 1966
Administration was handed over to an autonomous Board of Governors.
1964
Comprehensive plan for the shifting of the campus from downtown area to a new 40 hectare site near Karachi Univeristy.
1975
NED Government Engineering College was shifted to its new campus on University Road.
1976
Upgraded as the additional campus of the University of Karachi.
1st March 1977
Upgraded as the NED University of Engineering and Technology , under an act

NED is the first institution to offer technical education in Pakistan and produce local Engineering graduate since 1922. Now the old campus is listed as a Protected Heritage under Sindh Cultural Presernation Act 1994.

Realizing the historic significance of the old campus building, and its value as an architechtural heritage asset of Karachi, the university has decided to initiate an intensive restoration of the old building and rehabilitate the entire city campus for educational purposes.
