NED
University of Engineering & Technology has the honour of being the
first educational institution of Pakistan producing local engineering
graduates since 1922. The institution initially started off as the "Prince
of Wales Engineering College", later renamed as NED Engineering College,
is located within the historic quarters of Karachi on a modest 1.6 acres
plot. This Engineering College was established as a separate institution
for which the commissioner of Sindh allocated land in the vicinity of
D.J Science college. This campus was abandoned in 1975 when all academic
activities were shifted to the 103 acres "New Campus" on University
Road. In 1994 the city Campus was declared as a listed heritage building
of Karachi given protection under the Sindh Cultural Heritage Preservation
act of 1994. Realizing the historic significance of this Campus and its
value as an architectural asset the university decided to restore the
building and rehabilitate the campus by converting it into an exclusive
campus for the "Department of Architecture & Planning" of
NED University. NED City Campus Restoration Project presently underway, is being carried out on international principles of conservation under the supervision of trained conservation experts. The initial stages of the project are financed by the university itself, but to be able to take the project to completion, more funds are required. |
