The Department of Environmental
Engineering, (formerly Institute of Environmental Engineering &
Research) established in 1985 has been contributing effectively
in academic research, training and community based activities since
1997 when it is renamed as a department of this University.
With respect to academics, this
department offers two postgraduate programmes (morning & evening)
leading to the degree of Master of Envi Eng (M.Engg.)
by course work as well as by research. Emphasis of the programmes
is to equip students and practicing professionals with advanced
knowledge, information and database so that they can cope with
ever increasing environmental degradation of the country in general
and of the city in particular. During these studies, a student completes
a number of courses in water, air, noise, land and marine pollution, industrial and municipal solid waste management, environmental impact assessment, water quality management, sustainable development and other major and minor topics related to the environment. Course
work is supplemented with field investigation, seminars, and guest
lectures to enable students to broaden their understanding of issues
based activities working together with NGOs, City District Government
and other relevant Organisations in deferent development works aimed
at restoring and improving public sector services and infrastructures.
In future also, the department intends and plans to work in the
advisory capacity for agencies in charge of environmental management
of urban areas as well as the natural resources.
The Pre-Requisite for the Master Programme is a Bachelors Degree in Civil, Mechanical
or Chemical Engineering. The Environmental Engineering courses
are focused in the areas of water quality, water pollution,
air quality, solid waste management, marine pollution, environmental
health and sustainable development. The department laboratories
are equipped to monitor and analyse the environmental problems
related to:
- Drinking Water, Wastewater and Natural Water Resources
- Air Quality, Noise and Radiation
- Solid Waste / Hazardous Waste
These laboratories are being
expanded to acquire modern environmental instruments along with
a prototype pollution control facility on the campus for advanced
research and technology transfer. The department has a computer
lab as well, for environmental modeling along with access to
Internet to enhance research capabilities.
