Abstract:
This paper presents the results of investigation to assess the suitability of the sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) and stone dust (SD) as a partial replacement for the cement and sand, respectively, in concrete. The compressive strength, split tensile strength, water absorption and cost-effectiveness of normal strength concrete made with mixing SCBA and SD was investigated. The cement was replaced in three proportions as three percent, six percent and nine percent with SCBA whereas twenty percent, thirty percent, forty percent and fifity percent sand was replaced with SD by weight. The maximum compressive strength was achieved at nine percent SCBA and forty percent SD addition. Maximum split tensile strength was obtained by replacement of cement with six percent SCBA and fifty percent sand with SD. A growth in water absorption of concrete was noted with increase in SCBA and SD. The obtained results indicated that proportionate replacement of cement with SCBA and sand with SD can significantly improve the strength properties along with the reduction of cost of concrete.
