Abstract:
The proper design of traffic signal timings and phasing systems of a signalized intersection can significantly affect traffic flow, safety, fuel consumption, delay, vehicle emissions, and user and vehicle operating costs. In Pakistan, signal timings are arbitrarily set without analyzing different operational and geometric conditions to gain optimum performance. This paper describes the operational analysis of four-way and three-way intersections on the main arterial of Karachi at peak hour conditions using computer softwares. Sensitivity analysis has been carried out for various parameters. Different scenarios have been analyzed for each intersection and suggestions made for improved performance of these intersections based on the results of the analysis.
