Documentation and Conservation Report of Gulshakar Manzil (2019)

Gulshakar Manzil is a historical mixed used building built in 1932 on plot no: MAC-1/ 27 in Machi Miani Quarter. It is one of the earliest buildings in the region designed with a combination of RCC load bearing wall construction, prevalent at that time as the formal construction system in the city. The structure of the building matches with the stylistic approach of the time when it was built and is a true representation of the British architectural influence in the region. The façade rendering and the curvilinear grill patterns are a reflection of the master craftsmanship of this period. Along with the adjoining buildings Gulshakar enhances the historic group value of the neighborhood. Following the aesthetic and historic nature of the building, it was notified and protected under the Sindh Cultural Heritage Preservation Act 1994. This building serves as a visual treat due to typological planning, consolidated structure and rhythmic features of its unique architectural style - including detailed documentation and measured survey, and the preparation of a ‘State of Conservation Report’ giving recommendations for restoration and a detailed ‘Documentation Folder’.
