A 3-day workshop was conducted on 13-15 August 2025 with the women of Manchar
Lake houseboat village community, working around their identified skills
including crochet making, patchwork/ rilli work and embroidery. The objective of
the workshop was to encourage and promote supplementary and sustainable earning
opportunities through local craftsmanship skills.
Crafts expert Amneh Sheikh Farooqui (@pollyandotherstories), along with her team
members Nida Zaman and Zaibunissa Khatri, conducted the workshop, which engaged
23 women from the community. Participants were guided with creative direction to
develop saleable products—such as jewelry, tote bags, cushion covers, and
coasters—by building on their skills in crochet, embroidery, and patchwork.
Participants experimented with a range of handmade products, including
embroidered tote bags, cushion covers, and crochet earrings inspired by
Pakistan’s Independence Day (14th August) color theme. Following the successful
completion of the workshop, the women continued producing these crafts, which
were promoted by the Heritage Cell team as saleable items through the Manchar
Lake Mohannas Tours and exhibited for sale at the finale event. Through this
collaborative effort, the community women collectively earned over PKR 50,000
from their crafted products in a short span of time.
