CRAFTS DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP-II FOR WOODWORK CRAFTSMEN (August 2025 )

The second workshop, focused on woodwork craftsmen, was conducted as an ongoing engagement through multiple sessions across the project timeline. A number of craftsmen participated repeatedly, allowing for continuity in learning and skill development.

Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Anila Naeem, the craftsmen were encouraged to expand their traditional expertise in wood carving and engraving to create unique artefacts. Traditionally, these artisans applied their skills primarily to decorate different parts of boats. Through this workshop, however, they were introduced to new design possibilities and the concept of repurposing wood to produce small, marketable items such as keychain holders, chimes, wall hangings, and platters.

The creative outcomes emerging from these sessions materialized into a range of saleable products, which were showcased and sold during project tours and the final exhibition. The proceeds from these sales were returned directly to the community, supporting local livelihoods.

An important component of the workshop was the systematic documentation of wood carving patterns. This included recording the distinct names of motifs as well as the processes through which these designs are developed and applied to various parts of the boats.
